Unusual visit: the cellar of the Strasbourg hospices
In the heart of the Alsatian capital lies a little-known treasure: the Historical Cellar of the Hospices of Strasbourg.
Nestled under the Civil Hospital, this historic cellar of 1,200 m2 founded in 1395 is a true jewel of Alsatian wine heritage.
Between century-old barrels and exceptional wines, this unusual visit immerses you in the heart of the history of 600 years of Alsatian winemaking know-how.
Created in the 14th century, the Hospices of Strasbourg cellar was intended to store the harvests offered in payment for hospital care.
Over the centuries, it has built up an exceptional collection of Alsatian grands crus.
Today, it still houses nearly 50 barrels filled with prestigious wines.
But the real curiosity of the cellar remains without a doubt the oldest wine in a barrel in the world protected by bars and dated… 1472!
Kept in an oak barrel, this rare white wine has only been served three times in its history, notably to General Leclerc after the Second World War to celebrate the liberation of Strasbourg.
In addition to its impressive collection, the Hospices de Strasbourg cellar continues to produce exceptional wines today.
Around thirty Alsatian wine estates practice aging in oak barrels from all over the Alsatian vineyard.
During your visit, you will have the opportunity to discover unique bottles decorated with the Cross of the Hospitallers and, of course, to taste them.
